Here are some ways that signify your cake is ready. Now sometimes we underbake our cake, sometimes we overbake it. Then again, we just want to know what’s the secret to knowing when it’s done. Read this for some baking tips!
So, who’s up for baking cakes over the weekend? I know I am. But as a beginner, one of the things I tend to struggle with is knowing when my cake is ready to be served. And I think it can be quite disheartening to take a knife, with anticipation (be it fear or excitement), to cut into that cake only to find out it isn’t ready.
Now, if you are new to baking or are already a seasoned baker who just loves baking cakes, it’s probably not a bad idea to invest in long toothpicks or wooden skewers to test if your cakes are done. Now I mentioned long toothpicks specifically, because normal toothpicks aren’t accurate when are testing for a cake that’s deep or with plenty of layers.

Once you are done baking the cake and taking it out of the oven, just poke in the long wooden skewer or long toothpick into the center-most part of the cake. The ideal is, it should come out clean, with no streaks of batter—though a few occasional small crumbs are fine! And if it doesn’t come out clean, just continue baking until it’s ready, and have the oven turned off and the cake to cool on the counter.
If you are really wondering the necessity of long skewers or long toothpicks, then alright, I hear you. There’s also another way to tell if your cake is fully baked. Just look at it, the cake—it tells a story. You will know your cake is ready to be served when the sides pull away from the pan, the cake is pillowy and golden on top, and when the top bounces back when you touch it. Perfect! Do you have your own tips and tricks for telling when a cake is done?
